As we get ready for the Sarah J. Maas universe to continue, I have been thinking a lot about ACOTAR!
When I first picked up A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, I wasn’t expecting a retelling.
I thought I was getting fae, romance, danger, and vibes.
What I didn’t expect?
✨ Beauty and the Beast energy… but make it darker, spicier, and emotionally unhinged. ✨
And the more I read, the more I realized…
This is basically a fantasy fanfic remix of Beauty and the Beast.
Let’s break it down.
The “Taken to a Magical Estate” Situation
Sound familiar?
- Feyre kills a wolf → gets taken as punishment
- Belle’s father trespasses → Belle takes his place
Both stories kick off with a forced relocation to a mysterious estate owned by a powerful, cursed man.
And let’s be real, Tamlin’s whole Spring Court manor?
It’s giving ✨enchanted castle✨.
The Beastly Love Interest
Tamlin is… not subtle.
- Mask? Check.
- Beastly/feral undertones? Check.
- Emotionally closed off but secretly soft? Check.
He’s basically a fae version of the Beast, just with:
- more trauma
- more magic
- and significantly more shirtless brooding
he Curse Plotline
This is where it gets really obvious.
In both stories:
- There’s a curse
- It affects not just the “Beast” but the entire household
- It can only be broken by a specific kind of love
In ACOTAR:
- Tamlin is bound by Amarantha’s curse
- He needs Feyre to fall in love with him and say it
In Beauty and the Beast:
- The Beast must learn to love and be loved in return
Same bones. Just… darker stakes and more suffering.
The “Girl Who Loves to Read” Trope (Kind Of)
Okay, this one is more of a twist.
Belle:
- Loves books
- Dreamer, curious, imaginative
Feyre:
- Starts off unable to read (which is such an interesting flip)
- Her growth into literacy becomes symbolic of her transformation
It’s like Maas took the original trope and said:
👉 “What if we earn this instead?”
Where ACOTAR Breaks Away
Now, to be fair, ACOTAR doesn’t stay in fairytale territory for long.
It evolves into something much bigger:
- Political fae courts
- Trauma, survival, and identity
- A very different endgame romance (👀 we all know)
And by the time you move deeper into the series, the Beauty and the Beast framework becomes more of a launch point than the whole story.
My Take
Personally?
I love when authors take familiar stories and completely rework them.
And ACOTAR does exactly that:
- It uses a classic fairytale structure
- Then layers in darker themes, complex relationships, and high fantasy stakes
So yes…
Is it inspired by Beauty and the Beast?
Absolutely.
Is it just fanfiction?
Not even close.
It’s more like:
✨ a reimagined fairytale that grew teeth ✨
Final Thoughts
If you go into A Court of Thorns and Roses expecting something completely original, you might miss the fun of recognizing its roots.
But if you lean into it?
It becomes a really cool experience of seeing how a classic story can be reshaped into something darker, richer, and way more chaotic.
✨ Loved this post? You can grab your own copy of ACOTAR and the currently released books! See the parallels for yourself, it’s the kind of story that hits differently once you notice them. ✨
