Let’s be real, some days just take it out of you. Whether it’s a long day of meetings, problem-solving, or just navigating the general chaos of life, there comes a point where your brain simply says, “That’s enough.”
Lately, I’ve been a lot more intentional about how I unwind, and I’ve noticed that it’s less about doing one perfect “self-care” activity and more about finding small moments that help me reset.
🎧 Audiobooks + Cleaning (The Illusion of Productivity)
Recently, I’ve been deep in my audiobook era. There’s something about putting on a good story that makes even the most mundane tasks feel… slightly more magical.
Cleaning, for example.
In theory, I should have the cleanest apartment known to humankind at this point. I mean, hours of audiobooks + cleaning = spotless, right?
…Wrong.
Somehow, I’m still cleaning the same spaces over and over again. It’s like the chores respawn. But honestly? I don’t even mind. The audiobook keeps me grounded, gives my mind something to focus on, and makes the process feel less like a task and more like a ritual.
🎮 Gaming with Friends (Yes, It’s Overwatch… Don’t Judge)
Another go-to lately has been hopping online with friends and playing Overwatch.
And yes, we’re fully aware this might be a questionable life choice depending on the day. 😂
But there’s something really special about it. It’s not just the game, it’s the laughter, the chaos, the “one more match” energy, and the way it pulls you out of your own head for a bit. After a demanding day, that kind of connection hits differently.
It’s less about winning (although… we do like to win) and more about just existing in a space where the stakes are low and the vibes are high.
📺 The Return of Binge-Watching
Lately, I’ve also found myself returning to something I used to do all the time during undergrad and grad school: binge-watching entire TV series.
There’s something oddly comforting about getting lost in a show for hours. No decision fatigue, no overthinking, just pressing “next episode” and letting the story carry you.
It feels nostalgic in a way. Like reconnecting with a version of myself who had a little more time to pause, to get immersed, and to just be.
✨ What I’ve Realized
Unwinding doesn’t have to look perfect or productive.
Sometimes it’s:
- Listening to a story while cleaning the same counter for the third time
- Laughing through chaotic matches with friends
- Watching “just one more episode” (that turns into five)
And honestly? That’s enough.
Because at the end of the day, unwinding isn’t about doing something impressive, it’s about doing something that helps you feel like yourself again.
What about you? How do you unwind after a long day?
