When the nights get longer and the air turns crisp, there’s nothing better than dimming the lights, lighting a candle (a pumpkin-scented one to be exact!), and queuing up a good Halloween movie. Whether you’re after nostalgia, seeking jump scares, or wanting a cozy spooky vibe, you’ll find these classic films perfect. They capture the essence of October viewing.
So grab a blanket, a bowl of popcorn, and settle in, here are some must-watch Halloween favorites that deserve a spot on your screen this season:
1. Hocus Pocus (1993)
A trio of delightfully wicked witches returns to Salem, and chaos ensues. With its mix of camp, charm, and Halloween nostalgia, Hocus Pocus has earned its place as a holiday staple.
Perfect for: Those who love magic, mischief, and a good laugh with their witchcraft.
2. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Is it a Halloween movie? A Christmas movie? The answer: both. Tim Burton’s stop-motion masterpiece celebrates two holidays at once with hauntingly beautiful visuals and an unforgettable atmosphere.
Perfect for: Dreamers, artists, and anyone who feels a little out of place, even in their own story.
3. Beetlejuice (1988)
Strange and wonderfully offbeat, Beetlejuice is a gothic comedy about the afterlife, eccentric ghosts, and one mischievous bio-exorcist. It’s weird, witty, and still as visually stunning as ever.
Perfect for: Fans of Tim Burton’s dark humor and chaotic fun.
4. Halloween (1978)
John Carpenter’s iconic slasher that started it all. With its eerie score and the terrifying presence of Michael Myers, Halloween remains one of the scariest, and most influential, horror films ever made.
Perfect for: Horror purists who love suspense more than gore.
5. Practical Magic (1998)
This witchy classic balances heartbreak, humor, and a touch of enchantment. The Owens sisters navigate love, loss, and the complications of being magical in a world that doesn’t always understand.
Perfect for: Cozy autumn nights with hot tea and candlelight.
6. The Addams Family (1991)
Mysterious, spooky, and altogether spooky, The Addams Family is Halloween comfort viewing at its best. With sharp humor and heartwarming weirdness, it celebrates the beauty of being different.
Perfect for: Families and anyone who embraces the wonderfully strange.
7. Scream (1996)
A self-aware slasher that both parodies and honors the horror genre, Scream revived 90s horror and gave us one of the most recognizable masks in cinema.
Perfect for: Viewers who like their scares with a side of smart humor.
8. Coraline (2009)
A dark fantasy that’s equal parts whimsical and chilling, Coraline reminds us to appreciate what we have — and to be careful what we wish for. The stop-motion artistry alone makes it a visual gem.
Perfect for: Those who enjoy eerie tales that still feel magical.
