Red, White, & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Spoiler-Free Synopsis

Red, White & Royal Blue tells the story of Alex Claremont-Diaz, the First Son of the United States, and Prince Henry of Wales. When a public feud between the two causes a political scandal, they’re forced into a fake friendship for the sake of diplomacy. What starts as a staged truce quickly grows into something deeper and far more complicated as both men navigate love, duty, and the weight of living in the public eye.

My Thoughts & Review

(Spoiler Alert: spoilers ahead!)

From the very first chapter, I was hooked. There’s just something magnetic about Alex and Henry’s relationship, it starts off with tension, almost comical in its rivalry, and then slowly grows into this beautifully layered romance. The progression felt natural, even if the idea of the First Son of the United States and a British prince secretly dating is wildly unlikely in real life. That’s part of the magic of this book though, it invites you to imagine a world where love can flourish in even the most impossible circumstances.

I especially loved the male/male romance at the center of the story. It’s so refreshing to see a love story that’s unapologetically queer, joyful, and swoony. The representation alone made my heart full, but what really made this stand out was how deeply human the characters are. Alex’s fiery energy and Henry’s quiet restraint balance each other in such a perfect way, you can feel the push and pull between them with every interaction. Their banter is electric, their vulnerability is touching, and yes… their steamy moments? Let’s just say Casey McQuiston knows how to write romance that sizzles.

Beyond the romance, I also appreciated the deeper themes woven into the book. It’s about identity, about family expectations, and about the courage it takes to live authentically when the whole world is watching. At times, it made me laugh out loud, and at others, it tugged at my heart. I couldn’t stop reading because I didn’t just want to know how their love story unfolded, I needed to.

For me, Red, White & Royal Blue hit all the marks: witty dialogue, heartfelt romance, a dash of political intrigue, and just the right amount of fantasy-tinged hope. It’s the kind of story that makes you want to believe in love that defies boundaries, and that’s why it quickly became one of my all-time favorites.

Favorite Moments

Two moments in particular really stuck with me. The infamous cake scene had me laughing out loud—it was the perfect blend of chaos and comedy that set the tone for everything that followed.

And then, on the completely opposite end, the moment when Alex’s mom became president gave me goosebumps. It was powerful, hopeful, and such a memorable backdrop for the love story at the heart of the book. These scenes, among so many others, are why this story has stayed with me long after finishing.

Recommendation

I give this book my highest recommendation: a MUST READ. It’s easily one of my favorite books of all time, and I know I’ll come back to it again. If you’re looking for a heartfelt, sexy, and uplifting romance that leaves you smiling long after the last page, Red, White & Royal Blue is it.
