Holding a book in your hands is timeless. You hear the rustle of pages (yes, even swipes on a e-reader count HAHA). A story unfolds only as quickly as you let it. You imagine a world entirely in your mind. For me, a traditional book has always been the gold standard. The written word allows for deeper character exploration. It encourages quiet reflection. It inspires the kind of imagination that no screen can fully replicate.
But sometimes, a film or TV adaptation manages to do something extraordinary. When a director truly understands the heart of the story, the visual medium can elevate the narrative. When the cast brings the characters to life with authenticity, it enhances the story in ways the page alone cannot. A sweeping landscape can capture emotions. A carefully chosen soundtrack can also capture emotions. Even a single glance between actors can express feelings that words only hint at.
Of course, not every adaptation succeeds, many stumble when they sacrifice depth for spectacle. Still, when it’s done well, it can feel like seeing an old friend in a new light: familiar, yet surprising.
So, which is better? For me, the book will always come first. I’ve come to appreciate that the screen can be more than just a companion to the book. When handled with care, it can be a valuable addition – It can be a celebration of it!
