Assistant to the Villain (Assistant and the Villain, #1) by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

Spoiler-Free Synopsis
Evie Sage never expected her new job search to land her in the lair of the most notorious villain in the kingdom. But when chance brings her face-to-face with the ruthless (and very attractive) Villain, she finds herself unexpectedly hired as his assistant. Between handling cursed memos, dodging magical traps, and keeping the murder-happy staff in line, Evie realizes the job is far from ordinary. But the more time she spends around her dangerously charming boss, the more the lines between morality, survival, and attraction start to blur.

My Thoughts

(Spoiler Alert: minor spoilers ahead!)
This book is a clever mix of fantasy and workplace comedy. I loved how Evie’s inner monologue is witty and relatable—she’s stumbling through absurd situations with a mix of practicality and sarcasm that makes her really easy to root for. The Villain himself is dark, broody, and oddly endearing, which makes their banter a huge highlight of the story. While the plot is playful and often ridiculous in the best way, there are also moments of vulnerability and tension that add depth to their dynamic. It feels like a love letter to readers who enjoy “enemies-to-lovers” but want it wrapped in humor and whimsy.

Would I Recommend It?
Definitely—for anyone who loves cozy fantasy, workplace hijinks, or rom-coms with a touch of dark humor. If you enjoy books like Legends & Lattes but want something a little more chaotic and romantically charged, Assistant to the Villain is a perfect pick. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of its charm.
